Never underestimate the power of your witness.

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Matthew 28: 19-20

Befriending the outcast, preaching the gospel, doing good works are fundamental to being a good Christian. To be like Christ, we are called to do all of these things with great love. This doesn’t mean that we are all meant to speak on national television, found an international aid organization, or become a Grammy winning Christian artist. Your platform may never be that great, but your witness is just as important.

“Never underestimate the power of your witness.” That’s evangelism in a nutshell.Jesus challenges us to go out, not to be afraid, and serve others. As Christians we are called to walk the walk and talk the talk. Don’t get me wrong, this is ridiculously intimidating. I’m not sure if it is the confidence needed, or the over-the-top examples that I saw, but evangelization has always freaked me out.

I’m not the type of person who can easily strike up conversation with strangers. I’m not the best at crafts or music, and I struggle with articulating exactly how I think and feel. So how can I evangelize while staying true to my personality, my strengths, my faith journey?

By living God’s love in our daily life. By loving and supporting each other. By serving and caring for those most in need. In the way we work. How we treat strangers and friends. Every day we can evangelize our family members, coworkers, fellow commuters, and strangers by leading a faithful life. Our life alone is a witness of God. The “ordinary” patterns of our life can bring about conversion.

I try to live my life like Christ. It’s a daily struggle, and I almost always fall short. But my life is His. In trying to do the right thing, I am a witness. By acting as a peacemaker in my family, I am a witness. By being open with my struggles during a difficult season, I am a witness. By speaking to a stranger on the bus, I am a witness. In all deeds, small and large, you have the opportunity to show the love of God to others. The world has the opportunity to see the works and teachings of God.

Father God, remind us of your call to love and be a witness for you in all that we do. When it’s easier to walk away, not care, or fill our time with worldly goods, help us to be your hands and feet. Be with those who are not able to live out their faith freely. Comfort them, love them, guide them through this season. Amen.
