Jesus is my superhero.

“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26

I was obsessed with Lisa Leslie growing up. I wanted to be just like her. She was an amazing basketball player, the best teammate, and was always positive. Leslie taught me the importance of a good work ethic, sportsmanship, and courage. Of course the fact that she was popular, and one of the most accomplished women athletes at the time didn’t hurt either. In my eyes, Lisa Leslie was a superhero. She symbolized an opportunity for me to achieve sports greatness. (No, I’m not currently in the WNBA in case you were wondering.)

I saw this adorable moment between father and son on my way to work this morning,

and that got me thinking.

  • Why don’t I have a cape? (and then more seriously…)
  • I miss that sense of wonder that surrounds emulating a hero
  • Man, Lisa Leslie was IT for me 15+ years ago…who’s my current superhero?
  • What makes a superhero?

What makes a superhero? Based on pop culture (and my Google search this morning), a superhero is some sort of person/being/thing that possesses supernatural/superhuman powers and is dedicated fighting crime, protecting the public, and choosing the moral highroad. They give us an example of work ethic and professionalism, goals for the present, and hope for the future.

Then it hit me. GOD IS MY SUPERHERO!

Why had this thought never occurred to me before? I mean, Jesus was a professional. He was in the family business of performing miracles and telling stories. He was able to use ordinary people for extraordinary thing—supernatural even. God is fearless. He’s fought crime at the very source—Satan himself.  He has faced evil, conquered death, and ALWAYS did the right thing. He may not have worn a cape, but he cured disease, fed the hungry, cast aside blame, and loved the unlovable.

God has superpowers. He is literally not of this world. God can literally do all things. Nothing is too hard for him, nothing is too dirty to make clean, no one is too lost to not be found. He gives life, escapes death, fights evil and still prevails. He is always there to protect the innocent. God is the ultimate superhero.

Father God, thank you for all you do in my life. You are there to catch me when I fall, love me when I feel unlovable, and comfort me when I feel alone. The world needs you Father God. Remind us that you are powerful, and you hold the world and all its inhabitants in your hands. Be with us as we strive to be more like you in all that we do.
